Favicon

January 1st, 2008

Favicons are small icons that appear in the address bar of a web browser and are specific to a particular web site. Not all web sites have a favicon, but every web site can have a favicon.

The term is short for Favourites Icon.

When someone saves their web site as a bookmark or in their favourites, the icon acts as a visual identifier for that web site.

This picture shows the favicon for this website. The capital "W", highlighted in red is the favicon.

Because of their small size it is usually not possible to have the full company logo as a favicon, but it is normal to try and represent the style of the company in a favicon.

There are a number of free online favicon generators available if you need to make a favicon for a web site.

Folksonomy

January 1st, 2008

In a nutshell folksonomy refers to labelling items by what people generally call them rather than what the owner or creator of the item would choose to call it.

For example, manufacturers of equipment often refer to their products in technical industry terms e.g. "mobile device"  for mobile phone. The folksonomy around mobile devices could include mobile, mobi, cell phone, handy or hdy (in Germany), GSM (in Belgium) etc.

Folksonomies show what people really call things. They have been a point of discussion on the web because the whole point of having a website is to be found. And to be found, people have to use search terms that match your content.

On sites where people can bookmark items so they can refer to them later, and where they have the option to freely label the item with any words they choose, different people will call the same item by many different names. Knowing how people refer to your products and services can give new insights into how people use them and new ideas on how to market them.

A taxonomy on the other hand, is a controlled system of organising and categorising information where people label things according to a predefined list of terms.

Font

January 1st, 2008

A font is a type face. At the moment, web designers are limited in the the number of fonts that they can use for text when designing a web site as they are reliant on the font being available on the readers machine.

When creating graphics, any font can be used. But it is not advisable to use graphics to replace text on your website as it will not be very search engin friendly or accessible. Graphics most commonly used to replace text for elements of a web site such as a corporate logo and occasionally for headings.
